Scott Hallman was involved in a hit and run bicycle accident this evening. He was riding with Dave going down Rambo rd towards 324, he thinks he may have crossed the railroad tracks but all Scott remembers is waking up with the EMS around him. Steve Shepard is attending to him in the ER at PMC. Scott is banged up really bad and has some fractures but will be okay. They are keeping overnight for observation and he should be released tomorrow. Right now we need help with contacting Dave. If anyone knows who this is or a way we can contact him please let us know. You can call my cell at 803.984.3527. We need to get Dave to report all he knows to the officer about this case so hopefully we can catch this hit and run driver! Thank you for all your help!
UPDATE!!! Just found out that the guy who Scott was riding with was David and he has already reported all he knows to the hyw patrol officer. A lady who lives in house in front of where the accident occured also reported all she saw. It was a 4 door grey/ silver dodge or toyota car. They recovered pieces of the car from the scene and have been out looking for the car for the past couple of hours now.
I (David Stephens, 864 630-2662) was riding with Scott and he is very lucky to be alive. He was just to the outside of me 18 inches and was hit by a vehicle without warning. I filed a police report and the women who called 911 thought it was a 2-door and it has a missing head light lense now. I don't want to give too many details as it was very upsetting, but we need to pull together as a group and be there for Scott and put some pressure out to find the hit and run driver.
I'm thankful we have such a good set of members who are rallying around Scott and the prognosis is favorable. Keep us posted on Scottie's condition and if there is anything we can do. Of course I'll keep my eyes open for a car fitting this description as I ride.
David you're in our thoughts too. I can only imagine how upsetting this is for you.
Has anyone contacted any local news channels or newspapers about doing a small report on this? Sometimes it helps to get out there to masses...chances are who ever might have hit him said something to someone...and might help widen the search.
I am glad to hear he is doing better, everyone be safe out there.
I haven't been by to see him today, but he's in room 449 at Piedmont. Apparently the orthapedist is fitting him with a brace, and they're going to see how he's moving around, and he might be able to send him home today. His brothers are here in town, but I'm not sure if they're able to be there with him today, so I'm sure he'd love to have visitors.
I got in touch with Lucas (CN2) and he is interviewing David today (trying to get it on tonight) and he hopes to talk to Scott tomorrow to help catch the people who did this to him and to bring out awareness for us riders. Thank you David for your part!
I got a fruit basket for Scott and a card for folks to sign. I've got the card at the shop and will have it at the ride tonight, too, if you want to sign it.
Some of Scott's musician friends are putting together a benefit concert to help him out with bills.
Reading about this stuff in the news is one thing, but it's a bit more sobering when it happens in your own community and then you see them laid up in the hospital.
Get better Scott. Good to see you've got family on the way to help out.
My son Josh and I stopped by and saw Scott last night and his spirits were definately up. He really wanted someone to sneak him a couple of fat tires in. We are gonna take care of all of his yard work, we just need to get that address from someone please.
Does that news station come on local news channels or more like local online news or cable channels? What I'm wondering is how many people would have seen this news to know to look for a silver car?
If you are interested in making a a monetary donation to assist Scott with his medical bills and expenses, please feel free to drop by the Rock Hill Bicycle Shop and see Andrew. Thanks. Tina
Is there any way to attach a pdf or word file to a post in the forum? The highway patrol sent us a flyer to distribute asking for information to help in the investigation.
I heard Scott came home yesterday; he is going to miss the good pain meds!
Scott for your information, Corporal Brian Benfield came by my house yesterday and showed me a picture of a Chrysler 300M. He is a good man, he cares about finding the hit and run driver and is checking body shops etc. I guess I felt guilty that this happened to Scott not myself and crashed last night on the Thursday night ride to inflict myself with some nice road rash to gain some attention!
We ran in to H.P. Benfield out last night (eating dinner - not getting pulled) and he gave me a flyer to hand out - I am scanning and emailing around too... He does seem very serious about finding this person as well, extraordinarily courteous and professional.
I stopped in to see Scott tonight after work. He's mending up physically, with the lingering problem still his back. I think he'd appreciate visitors; let him know before you stop in: scotth@comporium.net. He still can't drive, so I was thinking he'd appreciate going out to eat one of these nights. Anyone up for Wednesday night?
This is a fimiliar scenario for me so I definitely sympathize with Scott and wish him the best. The physical injuries will heal for the most part but the mental effects will last for years. After I got hit I started using a mirror on my glasses to see the motorists coming up from behind. I know it's not fashionable but you'll notice most of the older riders have them. If you don't have one, GET ONE!!!!! If you're too cool to wear one, you'll someday wish you weren't so cool.
Masi is so right about the mirror. I mean you wouldn't drive your car without mirrors....would you? Also, there is no way you tell by the sound of a car if it is going to pass you with two feet to spare.... or plow right in to you. Get a mirror!
Yeah, I'm with you guys on the mirror. I just put one of the Sprintech mirrors specially designed for drop bars on my bike. I think it will take some getting used to; for now it just makes me a little nervous to see cars coming up behind me, but I like that it's convex and shows a wide angle behind me.
If anyone wants to join in, Scott, Paul and I are meeting at the shop Wednesday night at 7ish to go grab something to eat. We're thinking McHale's or maybe Whitehorse.
Change of plans--Scott's not able to get out tonight, so . . . not sure if the dinner plans will happen. I'm still up for going out, and Scott said we could bring him something. Anyone else in?
